ProfileStephen Z.D. Cheng, University of Akron, USA
In October 1987 Dr. Cheng joined The University of Akron as an assistant professor of polymer science, followed by promotions to associate professor with tenure in 1991, professor of polymer science in 1995, Trustees Professor of Polymer Science in September 1998, and Robert C. Musson Professor of Polymer Science in 2001. Between 2001 and 2005 he served as Chairman of The Department of Polymer Science, and he was appointed Dean of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering to begin August 1, 2007. Dr. Cheng has also been appointed to a number of honorary, visiting, and guest professors in China, Japan, France, Belgium, and the United States. His research interests are in the field of soft matter materials, specifically in nano- and micro-length scales. These include phase transition thermodynamics, kinetics, molecular motion and relaxation processes in nano-environments, crystal structure and morphology, liquid crystals and liquid crystalline polymers, surface and interface structures of polymer brushes, high-performance polymer fibers, films for micro-electronic and optical applications and high-temperature composites, computer simulation of macromolecular dynamics and transitions. Dr. Cheng’s research group now has 15 Ph.D students and 6 postdoctoral fellows. He has been the major professor of 17 M.S. and 60 Ph.D. students who have been awarded their degrees. Since 1986, he has published over 360 academic articles in research journals, book chapters and one book; and given more than 700 lectures and presentations at universities, industrial research and development centers, national laboratories, and professional conferences in the United States and abroad. He was selected to receive The Presidential Young Investigator Award by the White House and the National Science Foundation in 1991 in recognition of ability and potential for contributing to the future vitality of the scientific and engineering effort of the nation. He also received the Certificate of Appreciation from the University of Akron, Board of Trustees for his outstanding achievement (1992 and 1994), The American Chemical Society Akron Section Award (1994), The John H. Dillon Medal from the Division of Polymer Physics of the American Physical Society (1995), The Mettler-Toledo Award from The North American Thermal Analysis Society (1999), The Cheung-Kong Scholar, Education Ministry of China (2000), The TA-Instrument Award from The International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (2004), and The Cooperative Research Award from the Division of Polymer Materials Science and Engineering, American Chemical Society (2005). He was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), US in 2008. He is a member of The American Association for the Advancement of Science (elected Society Fellow 2006), The American Physical Society (elected Society Fellow 1994), The American Chemical Society, The Material Research Society, The Society of Plastic Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, The International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and International Liquid Crystal Society, and The North American Thermal Analysis Society (elected Society Fellow 1992). Dr. Cheng has served as the America Editor of Polymer since 1999 and the Senior Editor since 2002, and as the Associate Editor In-Chief of Chinese Journal of Polymer Science. He has also served the members of editorial and advisory boards of more than ten international journals. |
